Proposed shape and size of the final basin. Windbreaker for scale
Fire in Earth
The piece is virtually defined by interactivity. The basin is full of sand and there is a manifold under the sand that distributes LP to the bottom of the basin. When someone draws in the sand with a glove, or with a rake; the LP mixes and burns in the "valley", where someone has drawn. This results in it looking as though one is drawing in fire.
The piece is extremely self contained. We will be using a rake to restore the playa to the condition that it was in when we arrived. We will be using tan plaground sand, which very closely matches the color of the playa.
Previous incarnations have been galvanized steel, but this version will be hammered copper. We will be reusing as much recycled material as we can, and recycling any leftover material. The piece will remain intact and be taken back to denver in the hopes that we are able to grin it out to Black Rock City another year.
At the bottom of the basin there is a custom copper manifold that has been brazed with silver solder (with a melting point of 1,145 F). The manifold is fed propane directly from a regulator on a 20 LB tank (so the majority of the system is under negligible pressure) that can be stored either under the table or nearby. The amout of propane is further regulated by a 1/4 turn ball valve. The LP fills the basin slowly (the speed being dependant on how open the valve is). When the basin is full, the surface of the sand is "lit" with a flame and as the propane mixes with oxygyn it burns in the valleys of the sand. The entire system is very similar to a propane BBQ grill.
The piece is extermely self contained. We will be using a rake to restore the playa to the condition that it was in when we arrived. We will be using tan plaground sand, which very closely matches the color of the playa.
